ABOUT OUR MEALS
Our lunch service is the foundational service that Broad Street Ministry was built around. This service is available to anyone that steps through our doors and usually sees individuals with a wide range of levels of stability; from those experiencing chronic homelessness to individuals with stable housing and employment that still need the extra support a free meal can provide. Aside from ensuring our guests have at least one nutritious meal, we also recognize how essential our meal is to gaining new guests’ trust and fostering a sense of community.

WHAT THIS SUPPORTS
• In 2020, we served 90,000+ meals
• We see an average of 350 individuals daily
• This is the only meal ~20% of our guests receive daily

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
In Philadelphia, one out of five individuals are experiencing food insecurity. Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life and is not a singular issue low-income individuals experience. Food insecurity is often experienced tangentially with other issues that are important determinants of health; a lack of affordable housing, social isolation, chronic or acute health problems, high medical costs, and low wages. Providing a reliable meal service in addition to other life-sustaining services eliminates the time and energy our guests spend traveling to fulfill essential needs at other sites across the city.

Kitchen Takeover Series

We recently launched a Kitchen Takeover Series where local Chefs are invited to spend a morning in the BSM kitchen to provide a menu and meal for the 350-400 guests served daily in the 100+ year old sanctuary. Centered in the philosophy of Radical Hospitality, our meal service provides nutritious meals with locally grown organic ingredients to thousands of people yearly. The Kitchen Takeover series allows guest chefs to offer an elevated dining experience to individuals who would otherwise have limited access to Philly’s thriving culinary scene. We are are also offering volunteer opportunities for service or admin staff interested in a unique team-building experience.
