This Coming Sunday at BSM

July 23, 2015

bathshebaThis Sunday, Rev. Sammie will be preaching on 2 Samuel 11:1-15, where David takes Bathsheba for himself, and kills her husband. Sammie is going to be preaching on how the church (and society) deals with sin. Namely, that sin is when you do something wrong, then you confess, you are forgiven, and you are no longer sinning. But what happens when you are unreconciled, unable to look upon your neighbor, your God, living in a state of separation, which she will argue is what sin really is, and you are living this way because you have been the one who was wronged. When you are the victim, the church and society says to give it to God, forgive the one who has wronged you, or maybe even blames you for what has happened to you. And the result is that you are living in separation, living in sin, and there is nothing really for you to confess. You don’t feel guilt, you feel shame, and the church doesn’t have a magic method (like confession/forgiveness) to help you out of that sin. So I am going to propose that we need better methods, and we need to do it together.

We look forward to having Tony lead us in worship. We’ve got some great songs planned: Lord You Are Good, Because He Lives, It Is Well with My Soul, Aloe Blacc’s Love Is the Answer, Down to the River to Pray, and I’ll Fly Away. We can’t wait to sing together as a community! Come ready to worship!

We also look forward to welcoming the Saint Mark Presbyterian Church from Rockville, MD, the Westminster Presbyterian Church from Alexandria, VA, the Central Presbyterian Church from Downingtown, PA, and the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church from Saverna Park, MD to be a part of the Youth Initiative. Please join us in welcoming them here.
