Ash Wednesday Service: God, Have Mercy Upon Us
Join us as we enter into the season of Lent
Wednesday, February 17th, 7 p.m.

“Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.”  The Ash Wednesday saying connotes for some familiarity, for some anxiety, and for some confusion. In this service, we both look back at our encounters with Ash Wednesday and look forward to the rest of the Lenten season.
As we follow the story of Jesus journeying towards the cross, we begin by acknowledging, grieving over, in hopes of eventually breaking away from the suffering found all around us.
Where is God in the midst of our suffering?
Why do we remain broken and fragmented?
What prevents us from turning to God?
The traditional imposition of ashes will be offered during this service.

A LOOK BACK—
BSM hosts A Funeral Procession for Justice
We gathered, we mourned, we marched—to show our government that its recent budget cuts to SSI are unacceptable.
Clike here to take a look at this slideshow compilation of photos taken by a friend to BSM, Jacques-Jean Tiziou: BSM's Funeral Procession for Justice

DVD DRIVE!
Did you impulsively buy a new DVD during the Christmas season?  Is your New Year’s resolution to sort through the DVD collection?
Bring your new or gently viewed DVDs to the BSM office during the week any time during office hours (9a.m.-4p.m. Monday-Thursday) or on Wednesday and Sunday nights.

Films will be added to the 315 Café library as BSM and Bethesda Project prepare for its opening.  Action and Adventure films preferred.  Romantic comedies tolerated.  Film ratings suitable for this audience are either PG-13 or R.

 One Book, One Philadelphia 2010:
Persepolis
You came out for the book group...now come out for a screening of the film!
 Wednesday, February 24th, 6:30-9 p.m.

Participation in BSM's book group was lively and engaging, and now we gather again to view the film based on the graphic novel. Even if you missed out on the book group, feel free to come on out and join the discussion surrounding the graphic novel's translation onto film.
This event marks our continuing participation in the Free Library’s annual One Book, One Philadelphia program this winter.
The chosen book this year is The Complete Persepolis, a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi. Described by the Free Library as a:  “poignant, humorous, and heartbreaking memoir of growing up in Iran during a time of political revolution and repression,” Persepolis lifts up the clash of culture, faith, and politics in a dramatic way. Persepolis is an award winning graphic novel, and the recent film version has received international attention.

Come explore the story of one woman as she searches for meaning and identity in the confusion of war and religion, and discuss your reactions to it with other members of our diverse community.

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED!
Since Breaking Bread’s reopening in October, we’ve been excited to offer therapeutic art projects every week instead of monthly, and participation continues to grow more and more each week.

Help sustain this creative and life-giving ministry by donating some art supplies from our wish-list:
  • heavy drawing/watercolor paper
  • glue sticks and bottles of Elmer’s glue
  • acrylic paint
  • scrapbooking papers, stickers, decorative scissors, etc

Bring what you can to the office during the work week, or on Sunday nights.

THE NEXT NEW THING:
Sunday Night School at BSM: “A Class for the Curious”
Sundays 4:15-5:15 p.m.

Starting the first Sunday in Lent, February 21st, and the following 5 Sunday nights from 4:15-5:15 pm in the Sunday School Room.
This will be a great time to ask questions about BSM, perhaps all the things you wanted to know about but didn’t know how to ask.  We’ll also be diving into the essentials of the Christian faith.  This class will focus on spiritual practices based on the ministries of the BSM community.  We will also be discussing why and how we do baptisms at BSM.  All those interested in being baptized on Easter Sunday should join in.

Sitting room: Chairs for Sanctuary NEEDED!

Metal chairs are not part of the vision for our sanctuary . They speak of agencies, formality and uniformity. That's not Broad Street Ministry. After removing the pews to make our sanctuary space even more flexible than it was, the need for wooden chairs is greater than ever as we welcome more and more people to our worship services and meals.

We're asking everyone to bring in a wooden chair, new or old, and place it in the sanctuary next time you are here. Each chair will add a fresh new place of welcome to the community. All we ask is that they be sturdy.
Bring in one or bring in 20! Just bring 'em in!! The more diverse the better.
Like BSM.

Thriving in the Aftermath—Dealing with Grief and Loss
Come out on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, 4:40-5:40 p.m.
(2/7, 2/21, 3/7, 3/21, 4/18, 5/2, 5/16, 6/6)

Unfortunately the experiences of grief and loss are parts of all of our lives. Though we often survive these experiences, thriving in the face of them is not easy. At BSM we believe it’s important to journey together through all the experiences of life, so come and join us for a time set apart to share our stories, hear others’ stories, and be supported as we grapple with the issues surrounding grief and loss.
Questions? email amy@broadstreetministry.org or call 215 735 4847 and ask for Amy.
