The Film Series @ BSM is BACK!
Join us this spring for a special film series offered in conjunction with the Free Library's One Film One Philadelphia program:
Faith and Conflict on the Silver Screen.

Examining four films from four very different social locations, this series will explore the ways these directors have depicted interpersonal, social, and political conflicts whilst operating within religiously informed contexts. Though each film engages specific religious commitments at varying levels, all four explore the complexities of human relationships with these religious contexts in mind.

Come on out to one or all and stay for an enlivening discussion afterwards:
March 3rd, 6:30p.m.:
Secret Ballot (2001) – This Iranian film, directed by Babak Payami, follows a day in the life of a female voting agent. Winner of ten international film awards, including the jury award at the Newport International Film festival.

March 10th, 6:30 p.m.:
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter … and Spring (2003) - A South Korean film about a Buddhist monastery, the story follows the life of a Buddhist monk as he passes through the seasons of his life – from childhood to old age. Winner of 11 international awards.

March 17th, 6:30 p.m.:
Waltz with Bashir (2008)- An Israeli animated documentary film written and directed by Ari Folman. It depicts Folman in search of his lost memories from the 1982 Lebanon War. The Free Library’s One Film Program selection film and the recipient of 23 nominations and 24 awards including the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

March 24th, 6:30 p.m.:
The Apostle (1997)-  This gripping portrayal of a down and out preacher played by Robert Duvall.  While not his writer/director debut, it is his most memorable. Winner of 11 awards including the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director.

Commissioning of new DEACONS:
Palm Sunday, March 28th

During this year's Palm/Passion Sunday service, we'll be adding an element to our worship: the commissioning of the next class of Deacons!
What's a commissioning? What's a Deacon?
Commission, (verb)
-to authorize; to send on a mission
Deacon, (noun)
-servant
-one who assists in the compassionate work of the Church
-minister of mercy, especially to the hurting

The Deacons at BSM are lay leaders devoted to caring for the members of the congregation through prayer, presence, compassion and service.
The current Diaconate is made up of Heather Curl, Amber Mabie, and Ernest and Cassandra Ulrich, and our two newest deacons joining the ranks are Anna O'Neill and Antonio LaBoy.
Join us on Palm Sunday as we commission them and support all of the Deacons in their vital ministry here at BSM.

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED!
Since Breaking Bread’s reopening in October, we’ve been excited to offer therapeutic art projects every week instead of monthly, and participation continues to grow more and more each week.

Help sustain this creative and life-giving ministry by donating some art supplies from our wish-list:
  • heavy drawing/watercolor paper
  • glue sticks and bottles of Elmer’s glue
  • acrylic paint
  • scrapbooking papers, stickers, decorative scissors, etc

Bring what you can to the office during the work week, or on Sunday nights.

THE NEXT NEW THING:
Sunday Night School at BSM: “A Class for the Curious”
Sundays 4:15-5:15 p.m.

Starting the first Sunday in Lent, February 21st, and the following 5 Sunday nights from 4:15-5:15 pm in the Sunday School Room.
This will be a great time to ask questions about BSM, perhaps all the things you wanted to know about but didn’t know how to ask.  We’ll also be diving into the essentials of the Christian faith.  This class will focus on spiritual practices based on the ministries of the BSM community.  We will also be discussing why and how we do baptisms at BSM.  All those interested in being baptized on Easter Sunday should join in.

Sitting room: Chairs for Sanctuary NEEDED!

Metal chairs are not part of the vision for our sanctuary . They speak of agencies, formality and uniformity. That's not Broad Street Ministry. After removing the pews to make our sanctuary space even more flexible than it was, the need for wooden chairs is greater than ever as we welcome more and more people to our worship services and meals.

We're asking everyone to bring in a wooden chair, new or old, and place it in the sanctuary next time you are here. Each chair will add a fresh new place of welcome to the community. All we ask is that they be sturdy.
Bring in one or bring in 20! Just bring 'em in!! The more diverse the better.
Like BSM.

Thriving in the Aftermath—Dealing with Grief and Loss
Come out on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, 4:40-5:40 p.m.
(2/7, 2/21, 3/7, 3/21, 4/18, 5/2, 5/16, 6/6)

Unfortunately the experiences of grief and loss are parts of all of our lives. Though we often survive these experiences, thriving in the face of them is not easy. At BSM we believe it’s important to journey together through all the experiences of life, so come and join us for a time set apart to share our stories, hear others’ stories, and be supported as we grapple with the issues surrounding grief and loss.
Questions? Call 215 735 4847 and ask for Amy.
