Worship Service to follow w/ Bill Golderer offering a meditation
Prominent social activist Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw come to
BSM in order to stir the Christian political imagination, by offering
an alternative to divisive two-party politics.
In highly politicized times, activist Shane Claiborne and artist
and theologian Chris Haw are awakening the political imagination
of Christians with Jesus for President redefining "political"
as "simply how we relate to the world."
This will be a cool event…save the date!! and SPREAD THE WORD!
HELP
NEEDED! CAN U HELP US "I.D." SOME PEOPLE?
The loss or lack of photo identifications presents numerous obstacles
for our friends suffering from homelessness. Imagine applying for
a job without ID. Cashing a check? Without photo ID you cannot even
access a city shelter bed. Lack of "proper" identification
often prevents a person from accessing resources to meet their basic
needs, such as food, shelter and clothing. In numerous cases obtaining
identification is the first step to successful transitions off the
street. YOU CAN HELP!
With
a donation of $20. you make it possible for one individual to receive
a State-issued photo ID and connect with invaluable resources. If
you can help, please click here to give by PayPal or write a check
to Broad Street Ministry and in the note line write: 'Homelessness
ID'
BSM
Gets a New Boiler/Heater-unit! Big Whup? We think so!
First the BAD news: Our faithful patched up boiler finally gave
out. Good news: We are getting a new one this week! On a cold winter's
night, the basement of BSM welcomes 75+ individuals who would otherwise
be forced to sleep outside in the bitter cold. A new boiler means
that the inside is warm and welcoming. It means that a person does
not have to freeze and can focus instead on the game of checkers
they are playing. Our spankin' new boiler's warmth allows us to
provide the hospitality and welcoming environment that entices hard
to reach individuals in from the bitter elements...we thank the
presbytery of Philadelphia for this investment in the facility.
BSM
Broadcast Interview
Starring:
Kristin Walsh, S.T.B.M.D.E.
("Soon to be Medical Doctor Extraordinaire")
and BSM's Health Initiaitive Champion!
by: Laura Markle Downton
Today I have the pleasure of sitting down with Kristin Walsh, who
is lending her immense medical knowledge to getting the BSM Health
Initiative rolling. With the generous support of Drexel School of
Medicine & the National Institute of Health, the goal of the
Health Initiative is to increase the wellness of community internal
to and surrounding BSM by building solid bridges between our neighbors
who face huge barriers to accessing medical care and health services
available throughout Philadelphia. We are also seeking—long
term—to fill in the gaps where available services fall short
and increase our community's range and quality of health care.
LMD:
How did you get interested in practicing medicine?
S.T.B.M.D.E. Kristin Walsh: I made no grand pronouncement
about it at age five, but I just knew I wanted a career interacting
with people. You make these young, naive decisions not knowing what
you are in for. Then you get in and realize that this does not just
involve science, but a combination of sociology, economics, politics
and science. But science is very limiting because diseases vary
person to person. Nothing is fixed. Sometimes pieces fit, and sometimes
they don't. Yet you get to interact with people and be light and
grace in their lives.
I don't know that I believe you are called to one thing- but you
can do one thing well and not be convinced that it's "the thing."
I want to do what I do as well as I can.

Sitting
room: Chairs for Sanctuary NEEDED!
Old, discarded, unused, unwanted
Purpose, fresh, welcoming, original
Metal chairs are not part of the vision for our sanctuary. They
speak of agencies, formality and uniformity. That's not Broad Street
Ministry. So we need to replace all our metal chairs with wooden
ones and add a few more to seat the growing number of people worshipping
in the sanctuary. We're asking everyone to bring in a wooden chair,
new or old, and place it in the sanctuary next time you are here.
Each chair will add a fresh new place of welcome to the community.
All we ask is that they be sturdy.
Bring
in one or bring in 20! Just bring 'em in!! The more diverse the
better. Like BSM.
