An Initiative that Connects Our Neighbors to a healthy meal and Life-Enhancing Services

Breaking Bread is BSM’s weekly lunch program serving the community every Thursday from 11am to 1:30pm with a healthy meal (served at 11:30am) and a variety of social services. Currently the services include:

  • Haircuts
  • Clothing Closet
  • Hygiene kits
  • BSM Mail Service

This meal is for anyone who is hungry.  The BB Team is ALWAYS looking for new volunteers who have a Thursday free once or every week.  Please contact BSM’s Associate Director of Social Services,
Amy Root, or BSM’s Breaking Bread Hospitality Coordinator, Wendy Gaynor, for more information.

Therapeutic Arts at Breaking Bread

Therapeutic arts projects at BSM are designed to have several functions:

    * To help participants 'escape' or have a respite from very difficult life situations
    * To help participants delve deeper into the emotional and spiritual struggles they are facing
    * To empower people to engage their own creativity and see themselves as the beautiful, creative people they are

Projects are incorporated into several areas of BSM life, including the Social Impact Course, the Youth Initiative, Sunday worship, and Breaking Bread. Every Thursday at Breaking Bread we make space for an open art studio in the sanctuary. All are welcomed to come to the table, pick up an art medium, and express something. Art-making at BSM is more often than not about the process over and above the product--the belief is that the very process of creative artexpression is therapeutic and life-giving. The works of art you see on these walls, in the vestibule, and on your dinner tables were created by the talented artists that participate in BSM's therapeutic arts programs.
Questions? Interested in volunteering? Have some great project ideas? Willing to donate art supplies? Please contact Becca Blake!

Volunteering:

  • Therapeutic arts at Breaking Bread can take the shape of specific projects (ex: mosaic flower pots, expressive abstract paintings) to more of an open studio feel where participants are working on individual projects. Regardless of the project, many of our guests need one-on-one guidance and affirmation. To volunteer with this program you don't need to be "artsy," all you need to be is patient, kind, and encouraging. Come on Thursdays at 10a.m. for project orientation.
