Social Engagement: Alternative Breaks

Alternative Breaks at BSM are designed for high school and college groups during their Fall, Winter, or Spring Break where participants are encouraged to engage the larger Philadelphia community, instead of taking a typical vacation.

Known as the "City of Murals," each mural in Philly tells a story of who we are

The experience is tailored to your needs as much as possible, and can focus on issues of social justice in faith-based or secular language as your group desires. The week is spent in service to Philadelphia while learning about the many issues that make up the “poverty puzzle”: hunger, education, homelessness, addiction, health care, etc. As with our other Youth Initiative programs, an effort will be made to get paricipants to as many different parts of the city as possible and to engage in a variety of non-profit areas.

Before you register for an Alternative Break, please contact the Social Engagement Minister & Coordinator, Michele, at or at (215) 735 – 4847 ext. 107, to work out the details of your trip so that it’s the most meaningful experience for you and your group.
