The First Fridays Spring Series is Here!

March 9, 2018

The Spring Series of First Fridays at BSM launches April 6, 2018, 6:30-8:30 pm

Becoming Free Documentary: A Night with the Filmmaker & the Reentry Community

Doors open at 6:30 pm. Documentary screening begins at 7 pm.

Becoming Free is a project of District of Columbia documentary filmmaker Kristin Adair. The screening will conclude with a Q&A featuring the filmmaker, a collaborator of the film, and Philadelphians in the reentry community.

From the film’s website:

“Becoming Free is a short film and collaborative multimedia project that explores the reentry experience of three young people in the District of Columbia as they seek to break the cycle of poverty, violence and incarceration through entrepreneurship. But they are always walking the “thin line” that can lead back to prison with the smallest misstep or along a new path to the future.
The project grew out of a partnership with District of Columbia non-profit organization Changing Perceptions, which works to help returning citizens (formerly incarcerated individuals) to reach their full potential, personally and professionally.”

Poetry Showcase: A Night with the Writers

May 4th, 2018, 6:30-8:30 pm

Back after a popular spring series last year, Broad Street Ministry guests participated in a poetry workshop with facilitators and guest artists from the Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training, the comedy and improv scene, the creative writing community, and University of the Arts.

They are finishing up this six-month writing series by sharing their works with the public.

University of the Arts students are visiting the poetry workshop in March and April to create pieces based on the poetry and writing they hear each week. These pieces of creative work will also be on display that evening.

Join us for an evening of storytelling and collaborative art.

What is Enough?
Jazz Coffeehouse & A Night with the Artists

Friday, June 1st, 2018: 6:30-8:30 pm

At Broad Street Ministry, we talk about what it means to practice the philosophy of enough. In a world that declares the only ways to live are either in scarcity or abundance thinking, we proclaim a third option through enough thinking. What would our world look like if we believed in the practice of enough? What would this do to the ways we talk about our community members, share our resources, and treat the people around us?

Come and see how some members of the Broad Street Ministry faith community answer the question, ‘What is enough?’ through various artistic mediums. Engage with their works and have a conversation about what it means to believe and practice the profound simplicity of enough.

Complimentary jazz and coffee throughout the evening.
