Hospitality Collaborative Summary: The Hospitality Collaborative is a key aspect of our vision for Philadelphia: we envision the day when everyone crossing our threshold flourishes as they participate fully as valued members of a mutually supportive community.

315 Café is an extension of the Hospitality Collaborative as a response to the city’s need to hold emergency overnight spaces for the community to escape from winter weather. These overnight Cafés as it is often call is a service the city has asked BSM to provide for roughly 10 years now. We aim to maintain a space for our community to feel safe and experience dignity while they access basic needs like shelter from the weather and a warm meal.

Position Summary: 315 Café staff are primarily responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and supportive environment for individuals using café services. Staff are responsible for setting up meals and space for café participants, nightly as well as cleaning and re-arranging space for turnover after café hours, to prepare for daytime programing turn-over. Café staff with monitor the environment for any safety or health related risks or needs, and will respond appropriately to the needs of the space and individuals participating in the Café programing. Café Staff are also responsible for carrying out BSM Hospitality Mission and value and providing a service to the community in the most dignified way possible. Café staff are expected to develop positive rapport with participating community members in efforts to do deeper risk and needs assessments to be communicated to Concierge team and wider BSM Hospitality collaborative team.

We are looking for a highly energetic, divergent thinker who has demonstrated a capacity to think and work “outside the box”. At the same time our ideal candidate has established experience working with individuals who are vulnerable to severe mental health symptoms, in various stages of recover and or experience working with marginalized populations experiencing effects of deep poverty and social injustice; 2 years experience preferred in Mental health or related field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build rapport with guest community
  • Manage developing lines outside 315 café prior to open but building rapport with and returning guests and assessing level of resource need for evening shelter
  • Provide relevant shelter and outreach resources as well as connecting individuals to these resources prior to open
  • Conduct organized and welcoming entrance for individuals invited to stay at 315 Café
  • Document basic demographic information for individuals entering café
  • Clear Multipurpose room for unneeded chairs and tables for evening programing
  • Heat and serve meals to individuals participating in 315 café
  • Wash used dishes and maintain clean kitchen area
  • Monitor for risk and safety in the Multipurpose room
  • Monitor hallways, bathrooms, stairwells and other non-315 Café areas for risk and safety on a rotating schedule
  • Communicate community norms and rules of engagement with the space
  • Provide on spot light resources and concierging for overnight participants
  • Maintain sanitary space for participants to sleep
  • Waking individuals toward the end of evening programing
  • Clean and set-up Multipurpose area after all guests have left
  • Enter or log data collected during intake
  • Document incidences and notable needs and risks
  • Communicate with team members about the administration of above tasks as needed
  • Participate in supervision

This is a subcontracted position through First Step Staffing that will require further employment processing through First Step Staffing.

Part-time; $15/HR

LEVEL OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in services for people experiencing homelessness, mental health, and/or substance abuse issues preferred
  • Experience working with ex-offenders (returning citizens) strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Philadelphia systems available to individuals experiencing homelessness, housing and/or food insecurity, and deep poverty, including community resources addressing benefits behavioral health, emergency shelter, re-entry preferred
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a team of dedicated professionals in a challenging environment.
  • Willingness to learn the short and long-term impacts of trauma and the response that demands from providers of services
  • Understanding of the value of a harm-reduction approach to case management and social engagement
  • Experience with group work preferred
  • Flexibility and openness to working in a fast-paced environment with guests from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Strong communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong boundaries

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

High School Diploma or GED/ or equivalent training within work setting
