315 Café Shift Supervisor

315 Café is an extension of the Hospitality Collaborative as a response to the city’s need to hold emergency overnight spaces for the community to escape from winter weather. These overnight Cafés as it is often call is a service the city has asked BSM to provide for roughly 10 years now. We aim to maintain a space for our community to feel safe and experience dignity while they access basic needs like shelter from the weather and a warm meal.

Position Summary: 315 Café Shift Supervisors are primarily responsible for managing overnight staff, operations and administrative tasks. Café Shift Supervisors are also responsible for carrying out BSM Mission and values and providing a service to the community in the most dignified way possible. Management of overnight staff includes delegating tasks necessary to the functioning of the program while modeling Broad Street Ministry’s approach to direct service delivery. Shift Supervisors will monitor the environment for any safety or health related risks or needs, and will respond appropriately to the needs of the space and individuals participating in the Café programming either through delegation or modeling. Shift supervisors will be expected to keep a clear log of guest progress or concern, crisis and incidents related to safety, and staffing. Café staff are expected to develop positive rapport with participating community members in efforts to do a deeper risk and needs assessments to be communicated to Concierge team and wider BSM Hospitality collaborative team.

We are looking for a highly energetic, divergent thinker who has demonstrated a capacity to think and work “outside the box”. At the same time our ideal candidate has established experience working with individuals who are vulnerable to severe mental health symptoms, in various stages of recover and or experience working with marginalized populations experiencing effects of deep poverty and social injustice; 2 years experience preferred in Mental health or related field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct beginning of shift check-in with staff, highlight any key information passed on from previous shifts, delegate responsibilities, identify staffing needs or resources, identify who is on call for emergencies
  • Delegate and model how to manage developing lines outside 315 café prior to open by building rapport with and returning guests and assessing level of resource need for evening shelter in the most radically hospitable way
  • Provide relevant shelter and outreach resources as well as connecting individuals to these resources prior to open
  • Orchestrate entrance for individuals invited to stay at 315 Café, oversee demographic and roll call recording, keep an eye for safety concerns
  • Make sure space is properly set up for evening programming by, clear Multipurpose room for unneeded chairs and tables for evening programing, making sure heat and meals are properly prepared
  • Oversee whomever is delegated to work in the kitchen to maintain meal prep, distribution and clean-up
  • Monitor for risk and safety in the Multipurpose room
  • Monitor hallways, bathrooms, stairwells and other non-315 Café areas for risk and safety on a rotating schedule
  • Communicate community norms and rules of engagement with the space
  • Provide on spot light resources and concierging for overnight participants
  • Maintain sanitary space for participants to sleep
  • Waking individuals toward the end of evening programing
  • Oversee the cleaning and set-up Multipurpose area after all guests have left
  • Enter or log incidents and guest progress for future shifts to observe or be aware of
  • Enter or log and staff acknowledgements and concerns to pass on to program supervisor
  • Communicate with team members about the administration of above tasks as needed
  • Participate in supervision

This is a subcontracted position through 1st Step Staffing that will require further employment processing through 1st Step Staffing.


Part-time; $17/hr


  • A minimum of 1 year of experience working in services for people experiencing homelessness, mental health, and/or substance abuse issues
  • Experience creating schedule for a team of staff
  • Experience working with the excel and word
  • Experience working with ex-offenders (returning citizens) strongly preferred. Lived experience also welcomed
  • Knowledge of Philadelphia systems available to individuals experiencing homelessness, housing and/or food insecurity, and deep poverty, including community resources addressing benefits behavioral health, emergency shelter, re-entry preferred
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a team of dedicated professionals in a challenging environment
  • Willingness to learn the short and long-term impacts of trauma and the response that demands from providers of services
  • Understanding of the value of a harm-reduction approach to case management and social engagement
  • Experience with group work preferred
  • Flexibility and openness to working in a fast-paced environment with guests from diverse racial, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Strong communications skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong boundaries


High School Diploma or GED/ or equivalent training within work setting
