Us and Them: Music as a Healing Force
A Concert in Solidarity with Our Brothers and Sisters on the Inside
Songs in the Key of Free presents a concert of music by twenty-five incarcerated men from the State Correctional Institution at Graterford, located in Montgomery County, PA. The program consists of songs composed in a series of ongoing workshops inside the maximum-security prison. A live band of Philadelphia-area musicians including Alexa Gold, the Anna Crusis Choir, and TwizzMatic performs the songs while multimedia footage from inside Graterford connects the audience to the songwriters. These performances, photos, videos, and audio interviews reveal the creativity and humanity that thrives behind bars.
Founded by community arts activists August Tarrier and Miles Butler, Songs in the Key of Free joins an ongoing global dialogue about the challenges facing individuals, families, and communities as a result of mass incarceration.
The concert, presented in partnership with Broad Street Ministry, is interactive and participatory, and will include talks by returning citizens, BSM guests, and Philadelphia District Attorney candidates Beth Grossman and Larry Krasner about the issue of mass incarceration and about how music has been a transformative force in their lives.
Their debut EP hot off the presses will be available! Featuring “I Can’t Breathe,” “Welcome Home,” and “Million Dollar Blocks,” all recorded inside Graterford.

The Delaware Shakespeare Community Tour makes its first appearance in Philadelphia, with a performance of As You Like It at Broad Street Ministry on Friday, November 3 at 6pm. The Community Tour aims to share the experience of high quality, professional theatre with audiences who have limited or no access to the arts.
As You Like It tells the story of cousins Rosalind and Celia who escape from their kingdom to live in exile in the Forest of Arden, where they learn about love and life away from the comforts of home. The production features live music and a cast of some of Philadelphia’s most respected artists.
