April 2021 Volunteer Spotlight

April 6, 2021

We are thrilled to announce Lauren Murphy as our Volunteer Spotlight! Lauren is one of our favorite regular volunteers, volunteering up to 3 times a week, sometimes more! Lauren truly embraces our core value of radical hospitality, and you can see it in her daily interactions. Lauren has this innate ability to make every person she is speaking with feel seen, heard, and valued.

Lauren was initially brought to Broad Street Ministry by fulfilling a school requirement in 2013. Luckily, she decided to come back to volunteer in 2019 and has continued, even through these tough times of the pandemic. We asked Lauren, “what continues to bring you back to BSM?”

“I decided to make Broad Street my home upon befriending two very special people: our patron saint, Mr. Elbert, and a personal saint of mine, one gentle soul who invited me to sit with her every Sunday during worship. They were the first to welcome me into this community, though they wouldn’t be the last.

I keep coming back to Broad Street because I’m loved and accepted here. Some days I still have trouble wrapping my mind around it. Honestly, I have enjoyed so much privilege in my life that it wouldn’t surprise me if most of our guests wanted nothing to do with me. But by grace this community has embraced me, and I can no longer envision a future without Broad Street. I’ve found my people. I wish everyone had what I have here.”

Precovid, Lauren misses the hustle and bustle of our meal service. She vividly remembers the sights and sounds of a packed Sanctuary during lunch. In the midst of covid, Lauren told us she wears a mask because “I need Broad Street to be here for years to come.” The BSM community as a whole is grateful to have Lauren volunteering with us daily.

It comes to no surprise that what Lauren loves about volunteering are our guests!

“Most of all, I love our guests. I love being in relationship with them, whether I’m enjoying a conversation with someone new, or catching up with someone I see on a daily basis. I also love serving with a team of people who are as committed to helping our guests get what they need as they are to getting to know them on a personal level, and who strive to demonstrate radical hospitality in all they do”

Nowadays, you can find Lauren volunteering in our Mail Service or with Meal Distribution. Outside of BSM and covid times, Lauren performs the Rocky Horror Picture Show alongside other fans of the film.

Thank you, Lauren, for being such a wonderful volunteer and presence in this space. We are constantly amazed by the generosity, kindness, and compassion our volunteers bring to BSM every day.

“I feel that every moment of connection is in its own way impactful. These are the moments in which I know and am known: for instance, when I ask a guest how their day is going, and they ask me how mine is going, and it comes from a place of genuine care. Words are inadequate to describe the feeling.”
