On the Care of Children

September 21, 2015

There has been a lot in the news recently about children. The children of the city have returned to school, and we have seen the heartbreaking image of the Syrian child refugee washed ashore, after his family tried to escape from violence in their own country. Our care of children should be viewed through the lens of the baptism of children. In the baptism of a child we meet the God who makes a choice for us before we can ever make a choice for God. The community is also given the charge to take responsibility for the care of the baptized child. We bare responsibility for the world we create around them. There is no expiration date on the vows made on the behalf of the child, or the vows of responsibility made by the community. We show our welcome of a child when they inherit a better world.
