Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Hosey

July 9, 2019

We are happy to announce our July Volunteer Spotlight, Alex Hosey. If you visited Broad Street recently you have probably run into Alex. Alex is a jack of all trades here at BSM, making his rounds, volunteering at each and every service area.

For Alex, volunteering here is fun, straight forward and easily accessible. Tasks, expectations, and directions are readily available and clearly communicated. It goes beyond the logistics of volunteering for him—Alex has adopted and actively practices Broad Street Ministry’s philosophy of radical hospitality. Alex partially contributes this understanding of radical hospitality to the staff, who he spends a great deal of time with, “Most importantly, the staff prove to be role models in this setting, leading by example on how to practice radical hospitality to visitors entering the space. Guests, staff, and volunteers create a social and community atmosphere that makes it fun to serve at BSM.”

One of Alex’s most memorable experiences at Broad Street Ministry happened in our clothing closest, 315 Threadz. One day a guest asked for Alex’s help with his wardrobe. Alex and the guest spent several minutes picking out the perfect items, and when the guest made a final decision, he went on his way. The very next day Alex saw the same guest during Breaking Bread, “I see him walking through the room with a literal spring in his step, dressed in his new threads. I gave him a high five and served him lunch. It is nice to make a friend that I can still say hey to when we see each other walking down Broad.”

Alex first heard about BSM in 2015, during his first year at Medical School and has been volunteering ever since. Alex continues to volunteer with us because it provides a sense of purpose to his life, “I am currently in a period of career change and BSM has served as an important part of this personal growth period. While there are many ways to serve individuals in society, the work that I have done with guests and staff at BSM enlightened me to the growing need all individuals face, not just in the medical setting but in the community and on the streets as well.”

Beyond Broad Street Ministry, Alex is avid music lover, enjoys playing the guitar, is a self-described Phish fanatic, and even finds the time to participate in the IRONMAN Canada. We are grateful to have such a kind, considerate, and dedicated volunteer. On behalf of the BSM staff, we appreciate and thank you for everything you give to our organization!
