Volunteer Spotlight: Craig MacDonald

This month’s volunteer spotlight, we are highlighting Craig, a wonderful volunteer and self-declared food network binge watcher! Last fall, Craig needed to take some time off work and discovered he had some extra time on his hands. Not being one to sit around, he began looking for something to fill his time, and shortly after, a friend suggested Broad Street Ministry. Since then, Craig has become a regular volunteer in the kitchen.

We asked Craig what keeps him coming back to Broad Street and he said, “The kitchen team is absolutely wonderful. I was a little nervous showing up at my first event, however, everyone made me feel really welcomed. During the prep work music is on and Charles (sous chef) is usually singing while Stephen is interjecting stories and jokes. The time passes quickly and it is truly a great time.”

Craig said volunteering in the kitchen has limited guest interaction but he mentioned a time when Stephen, the Chef, brought him up to experience “Breaking Bread”, our BSM lunch service that happens M-F. When Craig was able to see what happens after the food he prepared leaves the kitchen, he said, “Seeing so many people enjoying the food I had a part in preparing is a wonderful feeling. I am blessed to be part of an organization that positively affects the lives of those that may not otherwise eat a cooked meal that day.”

When we asked Craig what he likes about volunteering here, at Broad Street Ministry he said,
“Life can be very busy, hectic, and I can easily get caught up with what’s going on in my life. Volunteering with BSM gives me the opportunity to get out of the way of myself, interact with caring individuals, and serve the community in which I live. Lunch service is definitely a team effort from the kitchen to the service team. There is a sense of comradery which is great.”

Craig’s humanitarianism reaches beyond BSM. He is a veteran nurse of 14 years, where he continues to help individuals and their families.

Fun facts: Craig is a twin, an avid animal lover and a dedicated Uncle to his wonderful niece and nephews.
