The Youth Initiative goes beyond mission trip mentality and temporary service-learning projects. We provide opportunities for youth to engage their faith in educational, motivating, and provocative service experiences related to prevalent social justice issues. For eight weeks of the summer, the Youth Initiative immerses youth and adult leaders from around the country into the diverse neighborhoods and communities of Philadelphia with BSM serving as their home base. We aim to identify and confront stereotypes of the city, of urban poverty, and of marginalized communities.
Each day, participants engage in relational service work in different parts of the city. Work sites give context to the intersections of race, food and housing insecurity, gender identity, incarceration, and addiction.Throughout daily dialogue and during our evening discussion groups, participants reflect on scripture to learn what it means to put our faith into action.
The goal is to spark curiosity, to identify ways in which Holy Scripture calls for justice and love for all, and to stimulate conversations leading to lifelong service and discipleship. Overall, the Youth Initiative is committed to forming compelling leaders who are founded in rich theological, social, and academic understandings of justice and who possess the ability to ask and answer questions of the good society and to assemble its future.
